About Fuel Oil Burners, Boilers and Furnaces
In a typical oil heat system, fuel oil reaches the oil burner through a system of tanks, pipes, and pumps. Fuel oil is then reduced to small sized particles and mixed with air for proper combustion. Atomizing fuel oil into a fine spray by forcing it through a nozzle and then igniting it by an electric spark is prerequisite to proper combustion.

There are six grades of fuel oil. Numbered from 1 to 6 according to viscosity, flash point and other characteristics of fuel oil. No. 2 oil is most commonly used for residential and light commercial oil heating.

Integral to any fuel oil heating equipment is adequate combustion air. Older homes usually have adequate air to mix with the fuel oil because of draft that is entering naturally due to air leakage. Newer homes because construction is tighter, air required for proper fuel oil combustion is piped in from the outside of the living space to the oil burner.
